Today we shall read about conjunctions.

Definition of correlative conjunctions:

When the conjunctions are used in pairs in the sentence, then the conjunctions are called correlative conjunction or correlatives. Correlatives are pairs of words that are used together regularly in a sentence. Correlative conjunctions work always in pairs to join phrases, clauses, or words.

 

List of correlative conjunctions :

Many pairs of correlative conjunctions are used in pairs in a sentence. The list of correlative conjunctions is given below.

1. Both…..and 

2. So…….that 

3. Either……or 

4. Neither…….nor 

5. Not only…….but also 

6. Whether………or 

7. Though……yet 

8. As……so 

9. So……as 

10. As……as

11. Other…….than 

12. Rather…….than 

13. Hardly…….when 

14. No sooner…….than 

15. Scarily…….when/before

 

Examples of coordinating conjunctions:

1. Both….and: Now we understand this with the examples below.

a. We both respect and love our parents. 

b. Both food and clothing are necessary for human life. 

c. Both husband and wife were present at the birthday party. 

2. So…..that: Now we understand this with the examples below.

a. I am so weak that I cannot work.

b. He is so weak that he can not stand.

c. She is so poor that she can not buy it. 

3. Either…..or: Now we understand this with the examples below.

a. Either Rahul or Biman will go there.

b. Either I or my sister will come to celebrate your birthday.

4. Neither……nor: Now we use these conjunctions in a sentence.

a. Neither Dilip nor his sister is injured in the accident.

b. He can neither sing nor paint.

c. They will neither read nor leave the classroom.

5. Not only…..but also: Now we use these conjunctions in a sentence.

a. He is not only poor but also honest.

b. He is not only healthy but also wealthy.

c. Not only he but also I helped the poor man.

6. Whether…….or: We use these conjunctions in a sentence.

a. I do not know whether he likes fish or not.

b. He does not know whether Piyali will go there or not.

7. Though…..yet: We understand this with the examples below.

a. Though he is poor, yet he is honest.

b. Though my grandfather is old, yet he is strong.

8.  As……so. We understand these conjunctions with the examples below.

As you sow, so shall you reap. b. As I was ill, so I did not go to school. 

9. So……as. We use these conjunctions in a sentence.

Moinak is not so intelligent as Soumitra. b. Rahul is not so strong as Rabin.  

10. As…….as. We understand these conjunctions with the examples below.

a. Write the paragraph as soon as you can. 

11. Other…..than: We use these conjunctions in a sentence.

a. I have other books than that.

b. He has no other friend than me.

12. Rather……than We understand this with the examples below.

a. They would die like a hero rather than ever tell a lie.

b. He prefers coffee rather than tea.

13. Hardly……when: We use these conjunctions with the examples below.

a. Hardly had I entered the home when it began to rain.

b. Hardly had he entered the room when I had left it.

14. No sooner……than: we use these conjunctions in a sentence.

a. No sooner had I reached the station than the train steamed off.

b. No sooner did he see me than he began to work.

15. Scarcely……when/before: We understand these conjunctions with the examples below.

a. Scarcely had I entered the home when/before it began to rain.

b. Scarcely had he entered the room when I had left it.
